Diese Reise fuehrte ihn unter anderem zu den Osterinseln, den Freundschaftsinseln, den Savage-Islands, und Neukaledonien - die fast ausnahmslos zu dieser Zeit in Europa terra-incognita waren und von Cook ihre Namen erhielten.Das Buch besteht aus weitgehend unverfaelschten Auszuegen aus dem Logbuch des Seefahrers. Es enthaelt detailierte Angaben ueber die Navigation und Wetterverhaeltnisse. Der Leser gewinnt ein Bild ueber die Art und Weise wie Cook sich mit den Inselnbewohnern arrangierte, wie er mit ihnen handelte und auch einige Gefechte werden beschrieben.
